Severe malnutrition is rising fast among children in Gaza as Israel’s total siege enters its third month. Many will die in the coming weeks unless world leaders pressure Israel to allow food, medicine and other supplies into Gaza, Islamic Relief warns.
Since 2 March Israel has shut all Gaza’s crossings and prevented all supplies from entering, in a cruel campaign to starve Palestinian civilians. No food, no medicine, and no fuel has been allowed to enter for 2 months. Even painkillers and tents for homeless families are banned, while bombs strike shelters and hospitals relentlessly.
Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war, and doctors tell us of horrific cases of children who are now too weak and emaciated to stand up. Wounded civilians and patients with cancer or kidney disease suffer in agony as health facilities run out of power and medical supplies.
Reopening the crossings is now a matter of life and death. Every day they remain shut puts many more lives at risk.
Islamic Relief’s team and partners in Gaza continue to distribute our remaining food stocks but these are now nearly depleted. Over the past few days we have distributed high energy biscuits and cooking oil to hundreds of families in central Gaza, but it is nowhere near enough and supplies will soon run out. We also continue to carry out daily cleaning of more than 60 shelters for thousands of displaced families, to try and stop deadly diseases spreading.
