Islamic Relief staff in Venezuela have described the ‘unimaginable’ scale of the destruction following 2 massive earthquakes last week.
Islamic Relief’s emergency response team in Venezuela is delivering lifesaving aid to those displaced by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck within 40 seconds of each other on 24 June.
“The scale of the destruction is unimaginable,” Omar Khalifa, who is part of Islamic Relief’s emergency response team in Venezuela, says.
The death toll from the earthquakes has passed 1,943 with more than 10,000 people injured in the disaster. Tens of thousands of people remain missing.
Aftershocks complicate recovery
More than 500 aftershocks have been recorded since the 2 successive earthquakes on Wednesday night, including a magnitude 5.2 aftershock on 29 June.
These shocks have caused further damage, forcing survivors to flee their makeshift shelters.
Many families who survived the earthquake are still homeless, searching for news of loved ones, and struggling to get food, shelter and medicine, Islamic Relief’s response team on the ground reports.
“We’re still getting tremors and aftershocks – yesterday some of the volunteers we’re working with had to evacuate their building because one of the aftershocks was so strong. Every aftershock causes people even more distress and trauma,” Omar says.
Islamic Relief has launched an emergency appeal and is distributing food and hygiene packsspecially designed for families who have lost their homes and can be used despite power cuts and lack of refrigeration.
The packs include things like oil, cans of meat and tuna, powdered milk, sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Each family is being given initial packs to last 1 week.
