Throughout July 2025, Syria’s Latakia Governorate has been grappling with widespread and devastating wildfires.
Triggered by a combination of extreme heat, high winds and drought, the wildfires have spread across forests and agricultural lands, causing severe damage and displacing thousands of people.
The disaster has largely been contained after 10 days of wildfires, but it has left livelihoods in ruins and severely disrupted essential services.
Many of those affected are already living in fragile circumstances after years of conflict has torn Syria apart. Dozens of vulnerable communities are now facing additional problems of power cuts, water shortages, and increasingly strained health services.
In some regions of Latakia, livelihoods that revolve around agriculture have suffered significant losses.
Smoke from the fires have spread as far as Hama and southern Idlib, triggering respiratory health warnings, particularly for children and the elderly.
Our immediate response
Despite the fires now largely under control, a significant emergency response is required to support the vulnerable families who have been affected by this disaster.
Islamic Relief have already distributed 150 mattresses and 150 blankets, alongside tarpaulin sheets that can be used for shelter to families affected.
We will continue to monitor the situation in the coming weeks.
